Share Your Story - Brent Storey

I was employed by the National Energy Board from 1974 to 2005. I retired in 2005 after 35 years of federal government service. The Board was a terrific place to work, particularly the years it was situated in Ottawa.

I have many fond memories while having worked there as a Safety Officer and Pipeline Accident Investigator. The staff I worked with was the best and one particular supervisor that I had (Jake Abes) was the best anyone could ever hope to work for as he was a terrific mentor and team leader who backed his staff and aided tremendously in their professional growth and development. To both he and the Board I will always be extremely grateful for the opportunities that were afforded to me.

My position at the Board allowed me to see a great deal of areas within Canada that I would likely have never otherwise seen. The work was always both challenging and rewarding. Three of my most memorable employment assignments were having worked on the Norman Wells Pipeline Construction Project, conducting a thorough inspection of the Yukon Pipeline that extended from Whitehorse in the Yukon to Skagway Alaska and finally investigating the East Herford Quebec compressor station explosion on the TQM pipeline.

I also have the Board to thank for having hired a young woman by the name of Susan who I met there a few years after I was first hired. Susan and I were married and today remain happily married. As a testament to the Board having recently made the top 100 employer list, Susan currently continues to work at the Board with 30 years of service as a hard working and dedicated employee. The Board not only has a role as a regulatory body but also has played a role as Cupid in that it has been a second home to numerous couples that met at the Board and later married.

I would like to extend my sincere thanks and best wishes to the National Energy Board on its 50th Anniversary and may the Board experience many years of continued success in the years to come.
