Video Stories - Deborah Emes - Transcript

Deborah EmesI'm Deborah Emes. I was a Board Member between October 1999 and October 2006. I can't pick out a single memory of the Board as being the one I want to talk about, but the three things about working at the Board that really enriched me and stayed with me. First, the ability to really see my country. I did hearings from Victoria to Dartmouth and I got to see the country in a way few Canadians can. It's a beautiful country and it made me very proud to be Canadian. The second thing that stays with me is the ability to work in both of Canada's official languages. I think Canada is a richer nation because it does have the two official languages and that richness is encapsulated at the Board. And finally, as a Board Member you are a generalist. It means you get to learn a lot about things that you wouldn't learn about if you stayed within your own particular discipline. As a result of my time at the Board, I'm a more passionate environmentalist. I don't see the physical world the same way. I don't just see soil, I see soil, I see sub-soil, I see it mixing. It's offered a great richness to my life. Lastly, I just want to congratulate the NEB on 50 years in the public service and wish you at least 50 more.

Thank you.
