I'm Gerry Regan, I was Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources when the National Energy Board was half as old as it is now, in 1984. When the Turner government was sworn in, I was offered my choice of portfolios and I left Trade to go to Energy because I've always been interested in that. Among the reasons was the fact that I thought the National Energy Board was well run and was very important to the country. I intended to take some steps to dismantle the harm that had been done by the National Energy Program under a previous minister but in the short-lived nature of the Turner government, I was only there long enough to start the deregulation of the export of natural gas.
Geoff Edge, who was the chairman of the National Energy Board at the time, was very cooperative, he was expert and provided the same sort of quality that we now have. The National Energy Board is a very well operated organization, vital to our country and I congratulate all involved in its 50th Anniversary.
