"Hello, my name is Jean-Paul Théorêt. I am Chairman of the Régie de l'énergie du Québec.
I'd like to take this opportunity, the National Energy Board's 50th Anniversary, to say how important my appointment as a member of the Board in February 1999 was to me - it was the most gratifying moment in my career as a regulator in the energy sector!
With the assistance of my colleagues and the very professional people at the Board, I gained an understanding of how important the Board's decisions are to Canadians, particularly in terms of secure energy supply. It was an extraordinary experience being able to travel across Canada and hear intervenors on applications to build pipelines or international power lines.
Through the incredible experience I acquired at the Board, I left six years later a better regulator than when I arrived.
I would like to thank everyone with whom I had the honour and pleasure of working at the Board, and all of those who welcomed me so warmly throughout my tenure there. Best wishes to everyone at the Board, all of my colleagues, and the Chairman. I am convinced that the Board will, once again, over the next ten years, play a highly important role in ensuring energy supply for Canadians, at truly reasonable rates.
Thank you! I look forward to seeing you again. Happy 50th!"
