Hello, I'm John Jenkins, commonly known as Jack Jenkins. I was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta and graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering in 1953. My first employment was with the Alberta Oil and Gas Conservation Board where I was a gas engineer. They were kind of a mirror image of the NEB but at the provincial level. I worked there until the end of August 1959. The National Energy Board was created in June of 1959 and the first members were appointed in August. The first Chairman was the Chairman of the Alberta Conservation Board. He was convinced to come to Ottawa to chair the new Board in Ottawa. At the time, I was a gas engineer working under Jack Stabback in the Conservation Board and they convinced me to come to Ottawa with Mr. McKinnon as an oil and gas engineer. They said if I didn't like it, of course, I could always go back to Alberta. Fifty years later, here I am. I went through the Board as Assistant Engineer, Chief Engineer, Director General of Planning and then eventually in 1978, in May, I was appointed as a temporary member of the Board and eventually a full member. I carried on as a full member until the end of my term in November 1989. As far as my experience with the Board, I enjoyed the rate hearings particularly. They offered a special challenge and I enjoyed those very much. I was also very active in the Pipeline Standing Committee, the Oil Panel and the rate hearings. Those panels dealt with the day to day responsibilities of the Board and were very interesting also. I found working with the Board was a very challenging and pleasing experience and I wish the Board the best in the next fifty years.
