Video Stories - Larry Gales - Transcript

Larry GalesLarry Gales, past chief of Research, Special Studies and Accident Investigation. I have very fond memories of the National Energy Board. For me it was the challenge. When I first started, the first big challenge was the Cochin project followed by Sarnia-Montreal and they thought that we didn't have enough work so they threw in regulation of oil and gas pipelines. Mostly oil for the first time and at that point along came Norman Wells. And Norman Wells we thought, wow, this was the biggest challenge. That was quickly followed by the Camrose accident which in my mind, from a safety point of view, was a big turning point for the National Energy Board because at that point safety became number one. If I look back in time, the Camrose accident really made changes, profound changes within the NEB and in industry.

After that I moved on and I feel that I have been very fortunate, unlike a lot of other NEB employees, because I have had a continual contact with the NEB. That continual contact has given me a flavour of how the NEB has matured, how the NEB has changed, how the NEB has risen to the challenge. Working in the type of business that I am in, the SCC situation was the next big challenge for the NEB and for the Transportation Safety Board and I must say that the NEB really rose to the occasion.

So, I have very, very fond memories and I want to wish the NEB fifty years of glorious history.

Thank you.
