Hi. I'm Lee Richardson the Member of Parliament for Calgary Centre, the new home, not so new anymore, but the new home of the National Energy Board.
I can recall starting a conversation back in 1984 near Edmonton with the soon to be Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and Peter Lougheed and I think Peter suggested when asked what does the Patch want, what does Alberta want from Ottawa, and one of the things he said, other than getting rid of the National Energy Program, was move the National Energy Board to Calgary and I found myself, not two months later as Deputy Chief of Staff to the new Prime Minister Mulroney, and that was a project that we followed through until 1991 when Bobbie Sparrow, a colleague, moved a Bill and the Board moved to Calgary.
I can recall at the time not everyone in Ottawa was excited about the idea of moving to Calgary but I can tell you now and over the years since, that I've come to know a lot of new friends and good neighbors who moved out and we're just real pleased to have the National Energy Board in Calgary. So, that little bit of your history may I add, happy 50th.
