Some of you may not remember me or you were too young to remember me. I'm Marc Lalonde, the father of the famous national energy program which is still being talked about in Alberta. Great program which was agreed between the government of Alberta and the government of Canada but which in the end didn't turn as it should have because the price of oil went way down rather than up. I'm very happy to have been invited to say a word about the anniversary of the National Energy Board.
Roland Priddle in particular was one of my Assistant Deputy Ministers before being appointed to the Board as Chairman, and before moving to Calgary. Roland was an exceptional civil servant with tremendous integrity, independence of mind but a very, very, very nice gentleman and I know that he enhanced the status of the Board together with his colleagues during the several years, the many years he was, he was Chairman. The Energy Board has played a great roll in the evolution of the energy industry, particularly the oil and gas industry in Canada obviously, and we're very fortunate that we've had so many top quality Canadians who accepted to serve on the Board, to be civil servants or employees of the Board also, and I think that the oil and gas industry has a lot to celebrate on this occasion for the contribution that the National Energy Board has brought to the development, the growth, and the success of the oil and gas industry in Canada.
So, have a very pleasant evening, good celebration, and I'm sure I will not be there for another 50 years of the National Energy Board but I wish them continued success for the next 50 years and more.
