Video Stories - Prospero Vito - Transcript

Hi there. My name is Prospero Vito. I was a Financial Regulatory Officer at the National Energy Board. I was there from, I guess the memorable years, 1981 to 1989, during the Northern Pipeline project and I had the opportunity to work with Geoff Edge, and Nadine Brown. My, there's really two memorable experiences. One I'm going to leave to later which is a little more funny but the most serious one is working with Nadine Brown and Geoff Edge. Geoff Edge took regulation to heart, and I was working with Nadine Brown and Geoff Edge, he was the former chairman, And Geoff Edge was summoned to a meeting at the Northern Pipeline Agency with Mitchell Sharp. And at that time Foothills was the builder of the pipeline and they were seeking some tax relief. And I was just the rookie, and Nadine Brown, my supervisor wasn't around. So Geoff Edge called me directly and he says I need you to come to me with this meeting at the Northern Pipeline Agency. I said okay sure. So we get to the meeting and we have all these high profile Ministers and Mitchell Sharp and Geoff Edge and all these high profile Ministers from the Department of Finance. So the Chairman, Mitchell Sharp, asked a specific question on the Northern Pipeline Agency, to Geoff Edge, and Geoff Edge didn't know the answer. Geoff Edge turned to me and says Prospero, do you have an answer? I says yes I do. And Geoff Edge allowed me to respond on his behalf to, to the Minister and everybody else. And luckily for me and luckily for Geoff, I had the right answer. So that made me feel good and had Geoff Edge feel good as well. So that was very, very memorable for me. The funny one, get to that, is taking the salaries and wages project from Michel Mantha who, that's all he did at the energy board. And this is it. So happy birthday NEB.
