Declarations of Significant and Commercial Discoveries

Notice: On 1 April 2014, the Government of the Northwest Territories assumes responsibility for the regulation of onshore oil and gas activities in the NWT outside of the Inuvialuit Settlement Region and the Norman Wells Proven Area and other miscellaneous federal lands. More information and a link to the Service Agreement can be found on our website under North / Offshore > NEB Regulatory Oversight in NWT Post-Devolution.

Applications for Significant and Commercial Discovery Declarations in regards to the Canada Petroleum Resources Act have been processed by the Board since 1991. Lands identified are in non-Accord areas and include only Crown administered sections. First Nations assigned lands,as recognized by land agreements, are excluded.

The Table of NEB Declarations [EXCEL 518 KB] is a summary that shows the field name and/or well name, company, NEB area with the declaration date and sections identified. Where there is a difference between the table and the letters, the letters are considered as the official Board record of decision. Land administration maps can be found at the Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC) website that show the resulting Crown assigned lands for all declarations made prior to and including the Board's declarations.

Applicants are encouraged to meet with the Team Leader, Conservation of Resources (tl_cor@neb-one.gc.ca) and staff prior to filing an application.
