What is the National Energy Board?
The National Energy Board is an independent federal agency that regulates several aspects of Canada's energy industry. We regulate pipelines, energy development and trade in the Canadian public interest.* The National Energy Board is also responsible for all physical activities related to oil and gas exploration and operations in the North. The NEB is active and effective in Canada's pursuit of a sustainable energy future.
* The public interest is inclusive of all Canadians and refers to a balance of economic, environmental and social issues that changes as society's values and preferences evolve over time. The Board weighs the relevant impacts of these interests when making its decisions.

Regulation Mandate
The NEB regulates oil and gas activities on frontier lands and offshore areas not covered by provincial/federal management agreements (for example; the Northwest Territories and Nunavut).
Responsibilities include regulating exploration, development and production, worker and public safety and protecting the environment.

Publications and Statistics
The Board also issues reports for areas under its jurisdiction called the Energy Information Program. These reports are part of the Board's monitoring responsibilities and provide information on the functioning of energy in regions throughout Canada.
We also regularly compile a number of statistics based on data received from regulated companies to produce publicly available information on energy imports and exports. These are updated on a regular basis and can be viewed on our website.
