Naming Process for Wells, Fields and Survey Grids

The National Energy Board (NEB) regulates oil and gas exploration and production activities in the non-Accord Frontier lands across Canada under the Canada Oil and Gas Operations Act. Effective 1 August 2008, the NEB will begin using a more systematic naming process for wells, fields and survey grids.

The following guidelines are intended to improve the identification of wells, fields and grid names and should be followed. For proposed wells, check the existing field area map [PDF 1629 KB] and select the appropriate field name. The field boundaries will be adjusted where appropriate for development purposes.

If the proposed well is more than one kilometre outside the field area, then a name from the list of known survey grid names [EXCEL 616 KB] should be used. For well locations more than one kilometre outside the field area and in an unnamed grid, the operator should consult with the local community to develop a suitable name and then provide the proposed grid name to the Chief Conservation Officer for approval. The NEB will add the name to the list of known survey grid names which is shown above.

The field area map provided below is a PDF file. A roll type plotter with a minimum width of 91 cm (36 inch) is recommended for paper reproduction. Both the field areas map and the list of survey grid names are subject to change without notice.
