NEB Creates Online Application System
CALGARY - The National Energy Board (NEB) today launched its Online Application System (OAS) to provide more regulatory efficiency while still promoting safety, security and ensuring environmental protection.
The OAS, which allows companies to build and submit their applications via the NEB web site, applies to projects that fall under section 58 of the National Energy Board Act.
The NEB tested this project for the past year, and received valuable input and assistance from several companies it regulates.
"The pilot was a great success, so we are eager to roll it out and promote a more simplified but effective review of applications," says NEB Chair Gaétan Caron. "Canadians benefit from energy projects that are safe and environmentally sound, and that is exactly what this system will help to promote."
Companies will use the NEB's online risk criteria to build their applications. The criteria used to determine if a project is considered low or high risk are in the areas of consultation, engineering, environment, lands, socio-economics and economics. If companies cannot meet one or more of the online criteria, the system will prompt them to provide additional information. Less complex projects will require less information to be filed, and more complex projects will result in larger and more complex applications. The NEB will maintain the same level of diligence and care for its reviews of all applications.
To file an application using the OAS, or to obtain more information, please visit the NEB web site at www.neb-one.gc.ca. Click on "Regulatory Applications - Companies click here to apply". This will give users the option of signing up for an account, viewing the online tutorials and learning more about the OAS.
Interested stakeholders or groups who would like further information or would like to provide feedback on the application process may contact their applicable Applications Team Leader at 403-292-4800 or 1-800-899-1265 (toll free).
The NEB is an independent federal agency that regulates several parts of Canada's energy industry. Its purpose is to promote safety and security, environmental protection, and efficient energy infrastructure and markets in the Canadian public interest, within the mandate set by Parliament in the regulation of pipelines, energy development and trade.
