What works well for CPTAQ

  • Information service to answer questions from the public
  • Publication of preliminary directions upon receipt and consideration of an application
  • Meeting with and listening to all people opposing the preliminary directions
  • Transparency and promoting specific criteria on which the commissioners base their decisions (often posted in the hearing room)
  • Decision made between three weeks and one month after the hearing

Challenges

  • Hearings are limited to the mandate of one statute
  • Commissioners have a mandate - to protect agricultural land
  • Problems achieving a fair balance of decorum and flexibility

Other

  • Have not been recording hearings on tape for about eight years - they now write summaries and reports
