National Energy Board begins Oral Indigenous Knowledge sessions for 2021 NOVA Gas System Expansion Project
For Immediate Release
April 29, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta – National Energy Board
The National Energy Board (NEB) will begin hearing Oral Indigenous Knowledge on the 2021 NOVA Gas Transmission Ltd. (NGTL) System Expansion Project. The sessions will begin in Grande Prairie (Apr 30) and conclude in Calgary (May 13-17).
The NGTL System Expansion Project is an application to build an additional natural gas pipeline and associated facilities from close to Grande Prairie to north of Calgary, parallel or adjacent to the existing NGTL system.
The NEB recognizes that Indigenous peoples have an oral tradition for sharing knowledge from generation to generation. This information cannot always be shared meaningfully or adequately in writing. Indigenous knowledge can help provide relevant information to the NEB, including information that may otherwise have been unavailable. This helps the NEB to identify potential environmental effects, strengthen any potential mitigation measures and create well-informed recommendations and decisions.
A schedule can be found on the NGTL project page.
For more information on the Oral Indigenous Knowledge sessions, please see Procedural Update No. 2 [Filing A98599] .
The public is welcome to attend. Those unable to attend the hearing in person can access both a live audio feed and a daily transcript on our website.
- NGTL applied to the NEB on February 27, 2018 for permission to build and operate the proposed 344 km-long 2021 NGTL System Expansion Project. The estimated capital cost of the project is approximately $2.3 billion.
- The NEB has provided up to $1,588,830 of funding to support meaningful participation during the hearing process.
- There will be 12 Indigenous groups presenting Oral Indigenous Knowledge.
