Pressure Restrictions

At the NEB, we do everything we can to ensure that companies follow regulations and best practices, so issues don’t arise with pipelines.

If an incident occurs on a pipeline, or if the NEB develops concerns about any aspect of the safety of the pipeline or its operation, temporary measures are needed until the incident can be fully investigated and corrective actions are taken.

One of these measures is reducing the operating pressure in the pipe as a precaution, until the issue is investigated and remediated if necessary.

When the issue has been fixed, the company then submits an engineering assessment to the NEB for review.

The assessment demonstrates to the NEB that the pressure can be safely raised.

Once reviewed by the NEB, the pipeline can be returned to full operating pressure.
